Canada: Canadian Immigration proposes stricter marriage requirements
21 april 2011
A newly proposed rule in Canada would require foreigners coming to live with their partners to be in the relationship for two years before obtaining permanent resident status. The proposal is part of Citizenship and Immigration Canada's effort to stop fraudulent marriages, and would grant only conditional permanent residence status to those partners who have been in a relationship for less than two years. The status can be revoked if the partners separate before the two years have passed. The government is also proposing a "sponsorship" that would prevent foreigners who obtained their residency as a sponsored partner from sponsoring a new partner for five years.
