Russia: Medvedev signs law easing registration for expats

21 april 2011

Russian president Dmitry Medvedev responded to pressure from foreign businesses by easing tough registration laws that only became effective February 15. Medvedev authorized a new law giving foreigners seven rather than three days to notify authorities of their presence and allowing landlords to register foreign tenants by their employer's address rather than their actual address. To prevent extortion by corrupt officers, police may not collect fines from foreigners who do not have the correct registration papers. Instead, violations will be the responsibility of the organization issuing the visa invitation.
